Let me guess, you just searched Google about how to charge laptop without a charger or how to charge laptop with HDMI or USB type-C. Right? Perfect!
This article gives a brief introduction about how to charge a laptop with HDMI or USB type-C. I bet you may not be aware that the secret power charging technique is very easy.
When it comes to charging laptops, the LCD monitor is always designed for low voltage i.e., 18-20V while the laptop original charger supplies 100-240V depending on the country’s standard voltage.
If we could draw more than 20V from HDMI or USB Type-C then that would be enough to charge your laptop and it works very well with some high-end laptops like Dell XPS 13/15 and Apple MacBooks with an active cooling system (fans).
Benefits of Charging Your Laptop with HDMI or USB Type-C
1) Easy to use: just connect your laptop to the TV monitor using HDMI or USB Type-C and enjoy the video without any interruption. It also saves your money from buying a new charger.
2) Longer life of laptop battery: if you use your laptop from home only then it is perfect to charge the laptop with USB Type-C or HDMI connection rather than using its original charger because laptops generally come with 45W, 65W or 90W power adapters which are very small in size and it heats up while charging the laptop.
If we could draw more than 20V from the TV monitor (60W or above) through HDMI cable/USB type C cable then there will be no heating issues and the battery would last longer for few years.
3) 100% Charging: some people find that their laptop suddenly stops getting charged even though they are using the same power adapter.
So, it is very important to draw more than 20V from TV/Monitor to avoid this problem and for that purpose use of HDMI or USB Type-C connection works fine.
4) Charging Laptop While Using: many people like me want to charge their laptop while using it on battery rather than switching off the laptop every time because we don’t know when we will require our laptops and we need them always ready to work.
HDMI or USB Type C can also give life to your old laptop as well as save some bucks from buying new adapters.
Method #1: How to Charge Laptop with HDMI or USB Type-C
This method is for you if your laptop doesn’t have an HDMI. You can use the type-C USB port. Now, this is how you can charge your laptop with a type-C USB port:
Step 1: Connect the type-C USB to your laptop or PC through any available port.
Step 2: Now find an HDMI/USB C output in your TV, monitor or projectors. I recommend you use an active converter rather than a passive converter because it will give better quality video along with faster charging for your laptops.
Step 3: Also, connect your laptop charger pin to the active converter if possible or else you can buy a USB Y cable which contains two female ends and one male end.
Now connect the male end of this USB Y cable to the active conversion unit and the other two female ends to a power outlet and laptop respectively in that order.
Make sure that both these female ends are connected correctly in the right polarity (positive +ve & negative -ve).
Step 4: Turn on the projector/TV and press the power button of your laptop. You will see that laptop is charging and getting video signals from the TV/Projector simultaneously. And also the battery of your laptop will get charged quickly while using it on battery.
Step 5: You can use a USB Y cable for charging your laptop with a USB Type-C port as well (Only available in some countries).

Method #2: How to Charge Laptop with HDMI or USB Type-C
This method is for you if your laptop has an HDMI. Let’s see how we can use it to charge our laptops:
Step 1: Get a 2A (maximum) power adapter of TV/Monitor and connect its USB port to the type-C or HDMI port of your laptop using a good quality Type-C cable or HDMI cable. Now press the power button of the monitor and turn it on.
Step 2: Now your laptop is getting power through an HDMI cable or USB type-C cable.
Step 3: Now if possible, connect the pin of the charger to the active conversion unit (for better quality video output) or else you can buy a USB Y cable.
This time don’t use two female ends of the USB Y cable for making the connection between the laptop and monitor/TV because we already connected the monitor/TV’s USB port to the type-C or HDMI port of the laptop.
Use one female end of this USB Y cable to connect the laptop charger pin and the other two ends to the power outlet and monitor/TV.
Again both these female ends must be connected in the right polarity (positive +ve & negative -ve).
Step 4: Now press the power button of your monitor and the laptop will start charging. You can also use a USB Y cable for charging your laptop with Type-C port.
Are the Above mentioned Methods Safe?
Yes, the above-mentioned methods are 100% safe because we need to connect only the TV/Monitor’s USB port or type-C/HDMI port of the laptop with a laptop charger pin.
We don’t need to use two female ends at a time for making the connection between the power outlet and monitor/type-C/HDMI Port of the laptop.
Note: If you use a passive converter then it may give a distorted video signal or no signal sometimes so always try to use an active conversion unit for better quality videos & faster charging.
Also, if possible then connect the charger pin of your laptop with a type-C or HDMI port using an active converter or HDMI Y cable.
This is the best way to charge your laptop using both USB Type C & HDMI ports simultaneously.
