Today’s article is going to be a little different than my usual. Rather than actually helping you fix something, I’m going to try and predict the future. How much does it cost to replace a laptop battery in 2022?

It’s no secret that laptop computer batteries just don’t last as long as they used to, and many laptop manufacturers include a clause in their warranty specifically citing that problem.

Although new research shows that laptop batteries have actually improved greatly over the past few years, a new laptop battery still only lasts about 700-900 cycles on average.

That means that it loses anywhere from 30-60% of its capacity over about 20 months.

Before I give you reasonable quotes, you might want to read how to increase your laptop’s battery life.

Let’s get started!

How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Laptop’s Battery?

The first step is to find out whether or not your battery has actually failed.

You can easily do that by checking the “Power Meter” on your computer, which shows how much power you have left in your device.

If you can’t open it up because of warranty concerns, remove the charger and feel the frame of your laptop. If it feels very hot, it has probably failed.

Power Meter on Windows:

If you have a PC, right-click on the “Computer” desktop icon and choose Properties.

Then click on the Device Manager link under the large “System” header. Click on Power Adapters once inside to find your battery information.

Power Meter on Mac:

If you have a mac, go to the apple in the top left corner and then select “About This Mac”. From there, you want to click on “More Info…” and then look under Hardware for battery information.

If you find your battery is overheating, it’s definitely time to replace it.

What is the Average Life of a Laptop Battery?

Right now, there’s not a whole lot of averages you can go off of. If we take the expected lifespan of around 600 cycles and average that over the modern usage life of laptops, we get around 2 to 3 years.

Remember, these are average expectancy. There’s a high range of actual life, so keep that in mind when you see your figures.

What Determines the Life of a New Battery?

The price of a new laptop battery can vary dramatically depending on several factors. However, we’re going to try and give you a general idea before we go any further:

The age of your laptop: you can expect to pay around $70 for a new battery if your laptop is only a year or two old. The older your laptop, the more expensive it will be.

Size of battery: the larger the battery in mAh (milliamps per hour), the longer it will last.

If your battery is made by a big name manufacturer: you can expect to pay around $80 for a big name brand, compared to $50 for generic replacements.

Condition of the battery: if your laptop has never been opened up before, you can expect to pay a little bit more.

If your laptop actually needs a refurbishment: many laptops have parts that are very sensitive to touch, so if you want it fixed by a professional, you can expect to pay the full price of the laptop.

Warranty coverage: some warranties can provide free or discounted battery replacement. Make sure you check your warranty before ordering a new one.

Is a Lithium Rechargeable Battery Good for You?

Lithium batteries might be a little more expensive, but they are definitely worth it. They hold their power for much longer before losing the ability to charge.

If you’re willing to spend a little extra money on your laptop’s operating system or processor, then lithium batteries are absolutely worth it in the long run.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace A Laptop Battery in 2022?

New laptop batteries usually cost $40-$60, but the average is around $450.

This does not include installation or shipping costs, so if you choose to DIY your battery replacement, it could cost as much as $120 altogether.

The average life expectancy for a laptop battery is around four years.

In my professional opinion as a tech expert, I would say that buying a new battery after just two years of use is too soon. These batteries generally last longer than what the manufacturers tell us…

But there are always exceptions to this rule and you should replace your laptop battery if your computer dies on its own or experiences sudden power issues where it won’t turn on at all.

This is the general estimation of how much does it take to replace a laptop battery in 2022

  • 2+ years of normal use: $450-$70 depending on the phone model and skill level

(Avg. Cost: $55)

I would say that if you use your laptop daily (about 4 hours a day on average), it might be time to replace your battery after three years.

So if you’re still within warranty, I suggest waiting until your manufacturer’s warranty expires before taking action.

  • 3+ years of normal/heavy use: $60-$120 depending on the phone model and skill level

(Avg. Cost: $80)

If your battery is beginning to get closer to four years old, replacing it usually becomes cheaper than buying a new one…

But since these batteries are so expensive in general, it’s still not advisable.

Especially since there will be no installation fee and you can probably find a cheaper battery online (although there is no guarantee that the aftermarket batteries will work for your phone).

Note: All prices are averages and do not reflect shipping or installation costs.

  • 4+ years of normal/heavy use: $1250 depending on the phone model and skill level

(Avg. Cost: $120)

These prices are for those who want to buy a brand new laptop battery from manufacturers or official retailers like Amazon.

This is the last resort… But if you aren’t comfortable doing this or think your warranty might be void, then we recommend paying a professional to complete this task for you.
